Welp, my newest anemone (not the one in my avatar) had to take a ride down the porcelin express this morning. :( My maroons had 2 anemones to live in, but the new one just didn't take well to them. It receded in size and recently became the size of a silver dollar and my female just kept rubbing on it and harassing it. She chewed off all the tentacles, so I placed it in a secluded acrylic cube in the tank. She would almost always make her way into the cube (how she did it, I don't know) at night and would beat it up even more. This morning it looks completed melted on one side of the body, so it had to go. Strange thing is that it never smelled bad or fouled the water.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Good move removing it before it was too late.

By this morning, it couldn't have really gotten worse than it was. I am still stumped how it didn't foul the water. The base was just melted and the mouth was gaped. Only half of the base and face was distinguishable as an anemone. It's just weird, my other anemone is huge and healthy, even after this meltdown. Thanks for the condolences, much appreciated.

Just make sure to get all the tentacles out as well, as even they can release toxins if you let them sit in there too long.

Sorry buddy, but these things do happen. Look at the bright side, now you have an excuse to buy something else.

My maroons ate all the tentacles off that anemone, it was more like a stump this past week. This happened once before and it healed nicely and moved itself out of the cube and back onto the rock. This time my female maroon really beat it up badly. That's when I figured I would seclude it again to let it regenerate and heal. It never got better and started fraying really badly, looking like spun cotton on the edges of the face and on the foot. It just never got better. I'm just glad it didn't foul the tank any. I guess it's just one of those unsolved mysteries.

Yeah it was odd. My first rose anemone, my maroon ate it completely. It's not uncommon that they take a couple bites to acclimate to the anemone when they first host to it, but it is very odd. It may have just sensed this anemone wasn't doing well and was acting as a clean up crew, who knows. I now know why it is recommended that the anemone be more than twice the size of the fish though.
