I would like to jump start coralline growth in my newly set-up and cycled 14G BioCube and was looking for calcium additive suggestions. My tank has about 17-18lbs of LR with quite a bit of existing purple and green coralline growth already. Many years ago when I had a 90 reef I used kalkwasser and then a calc reactor once i started keeping stonies. With the stock lighting in the Biocube I won't be keeping anything but inverts and softies and 1 or 2 fish. I've heard of a couple of new items since I've been away form the hobby such as PurpleUp, Ionic A&B, etc., and was wondering what you good folks would recommend?

    Thanks

Your best bet with a system that size is to run a good 2 part buffer, like Warner Marine Cal-Max or ESV B-Ionic. Just be cautious of spiking the Ph in that volume of water by adding it slowly. Smaller amounts more often work much better than larger amounts less frequently.

What ever you add, make sure you can test for it.

Thanks. Would you reccomend one over the other or are both the Cal-Max and B-Ionic equally as good?

Purple up = waste of money.
Get your calcium and magnesium up through cheaper means.
Bulkreefsuppply.com has great deals and educational info.

Good info and a good site...thanks! Although it may take a couple of years to use up a 2 gal kit in a 14g nano ;)

Lol.. I have a 180 gallon and the biggest I've bought was the 1 gallon size calcium chloride.
Get yourself one of those for 16.99 and Epsom salt at walgreens for your magnesium ...1 qt. for $2 on sale. It will last you years in a 14G.
VS. Purpleup that has little in it.

C-Balance works for me. Keeps everything at perfect levels, had to adjust the magnesium a bit using aquavitro product but once I got it at the right level the C-balance has been maintaining everything. My levels are perfect but for some reason my coralline algae growth is not where I'd like it to be. Its a bunch of green coralline and not too much of it. I wanna be one of those people who complain about having too much coralline. My corals however are happy, my inverts molt when they need to and its about that time to replace the metal halide bulbs so lets hope that makes a difference. GOOD LUCK!
