I am trying to figure out gallons per hour for my UV sterlizer coming in the mail tomorrow.
My return pump (mag 18 ) in the sump... pushes two ways... through a 1/4 chiller that returns to the main tank... and through two lifegard aquatic filters (mechanical and chemical) then back to main tank.

I tested the gallons per hour through the lifegard side where I want to add the UV sterilizer...
it took 22 seconds to fill a 1 gallon container...
    3600 / 22 = 163
    163 x 1 (gallon) = 163 gallons per hour

    Is that formula correct?
Is that enough of a flow rate for a 36 watt coralife UV twist sterilizer? The instructions say minimum 300 gph flowrate... !!

    Thanks!
    Ryan

163.6 gallons per hour is correct.

If you follow the recommended flow rate, sterilizers tend to be useless. Organisms tend to need 5 to 10 times the exposure time that their recommendations would allow.

So you think 164 gph thru a 36 watt coralife UV sterilizer in my 72 gallon is ok? I was going to get a ball valve and close off some flow through the other side to the chiller to add more flow to the UV?
BTW - tech support was worried about heating the water too much with a too low flow rate
