I can't get a pic as it's on the far side of the tank against the wall, but i have a sprout of a macro popping up on my liverock that looks very similar to codium.I have codium short in my other tank from John, and this looks just about like it,it's only about 3/4"tall but allready "Y"branching and forming hammers on the ends of the thick limbs.I wish i could get a pic,but just wondering what the likleyness of this being codium might be?

I am also treating the tank with algeafix marine, and while my gha and other algeas are receeding, this"codium"seems to be thriving, growing by the day.

never heard of it growing in a reef tank before, but since it is an invasive species of algae and covers reefs, I don't see why it couldn't come in on live rock or other means...

I've also never heard of anyone using an algaecide in an reef tank either... have you considered treating the algae problem at the source- by reducing the nutrients that are feeding it?

I had a thread about the algeafix and found many on here that also use it with decent results,I am also aware it not a permanent solution, and yes my water source nutrients were the problem, but am now using ro/di and my nitrates and phosphates are both dropping off.I just found it funny after nearly a month of treatments and with my bad algeas dying off, this one popped up out of nowhere.I also wasn't aware that codium is an invasive species.I allways heard it was a great display macro?

I love codium and had some hitchhike in one time. It's a great macro and have used it in a few tanks. It's not invasive.

Sorry, my information is based on the algae causing problems in the wild, not in aquariums. I suppose it would be easy to manage in aquariums and it does have a very decorative look to it.

Since codium can reproduce sexually and asexually (like caulerpa) my biggest concern of having it become prolific in an enclosed system would be the possible release of gametes.

simplest way to avoid that is to trim it periodically, I have has Caulerpa Mexicana in my reef tanks usually in the sump for years and all I ever do is trim it back. Never once had a problem other than it growing really fast.

In my seahorse tank it was all over the place, not only did the seahorses like it becasue it gave them somewhere to hitch and hide, I thought it made the tank look a bit more natural.

thanks guys!thats the same thing i read earlier is to just perodically trim it back to keep in check. It has also sprouted a new"y"branch and i am becomming more and more convinced that it is codium."freebie!";)
