I plan on setting up a carbon reactor asap, but for now is this an good place to have a carbon sock? The sock is on top of a floss, and a layer of sponge filter.

as long as the carbon doesnt clump up and water flows though it, it doesnt matter where. carbon can be overrated and needs to be changed often.

Anywhere that gets good flow is fine. You honestly don't need a reactor.

I purchased the dual (GFO/Carbon) reactor from BRS already pretty good deal for the price. I have been having issues with water clarity and high phos/nitrate, tried everything else.

What size is your tank, and how much livestock do you have?

What's your water change schedule (how much and how often)?

Do you blast between the rocks with a turkey baster before a water change?

Do you vacuum loose detritus from the surface of the sand and rocks while removing water for a water change?

How often do you clean/change filter socks, pads, and/or sponges?

Proper stocking and maintenance is the key to a successful aquarium. While additional filtration may help, the build-up will eventually overwhelm any system and crash your tank.
