I had my Carpenter wrasse for a little over a month. He was eating well and got along with everybody. My Melanurus Wrasse starting giving him a bit of a hard time during feeding times chasing him away but they would also swim together just fine during non feeding times. Only thing that changed was i got a sargassum Triggerfish(who unfortunately didn't make it) which was also an aggressive eater but didn't seem to bother him at all during non feeding times.

it has been about 2 weeks since i have seen the Carpenter wrasse and just wanted to ask the community about the possibilities.

I keep egg crate over the tank and have checked overflow, sump, fuge etc with no sightings. Have checked the perimeter of the tank but if he did get jump out my cat could of gotten to him before i saw. Regardless it's been 2 weeks since i have seen him-any chance he is still alive in the tank or.... :(

anybody have any experience with a Carpenter wrasse going MIA for 2+ weeks and reappearing? or should i start looking to replace him?

Flashers will go right through egg crate like it's not even there.

I'd put my money on it having jumped.

You're best option for a tank cover is 1/4" clear mesh. You can purchase it via Bulk Reef Supply.

im not all that familiar with the carpenter. But i had a lunar wrasse that disappeared. For.what seemed like forever until i rescaped the rock and found.it curled up under a rock. It was not doing well health wise and i figured he was a gonner. But a friend.told me to just leave him and it would recover. It did but i never found out what made it go into hiding in the first place. I know the lunar likes to hide at night to sleep.and to this day i have no idea.where he or my cleaner wrasse go when.then.lights dim. If carpenters like to burrow then id xheck under the rocks.if thats feasable.

very well aware of some species of wrasse hiding in the sand. i brought home my Melaruraus (i can never spell it right) wrasse and didn't see him for at least 10 days. Figured he was dead between two rocks somewhere and one day he was out and about when i got home from work. After about another month he became the most active swimmer in my tank.

I don't think the carpenter wrasse's bury themselves, i think they form a mucous cocoon at night. I wish Cat's talked because i would at least know he she ate the fish or it's still "mia" somewhere in the tank.

Paracheilinus wrasses do NOT sleep in the sand.

...most of the time. Mine(McCoskers) gets confused on his instinctual sleeping habits...under sand in my tube anemone tupperware or under a piece of rubble rock at times. I run a bare bottom by the way. I do find his mucus cocoon snagged on my eggcrate frag racks often.

Under a rock (or equivalent) on top of the sand is within the range of typical, but buried in the sand is odd indeed.

What's in your water Andy? :D
