Carpets have had higher survival rates when you dig out the sand to the glass and let them foot the bottom of your tank. Some make it higher but IME they like when you dig them a hole.

Put a flat rock under the sand and they will attach to it...
Remember that carpets are tough to keep and are NEEDED on the reefs to keep the clownfish breeding pairs going. Not only that carpets reproduce VERY slowly, please be considerate before purchasing a carpet that can grow multiple feet wide and will eat fish with no problem.

About a month ago our local club took a bus trip to some Chicago area stores, one of the members bought two beautiful green and blue carpets.
After about a week I asked him if they ate any fish yet, he said no.
A few days later his large powder blue tang was sticking tail out of the blue one!! Thats an expensive meal!!

I'm so glad I read this. I have been aquascaping my tank with hopes to get a carpet in about 9 months. I won't be getting one now. You may have saved me some mourning and some fishes lives. Thank you!!

The local LFS here has a carpet that is about 16 inches across and I have watched it eat fish.... It is hosted with 3 Clarkii Clown's. It is a very beautiful green anemone..I wonder if they will ever eat the fish they host with....
