It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Are you going to provide supplemental light to the specific area that you would like to grow the chaeto ?

What is it's intended use for your tank ie: are you trying to battle cynobacteria, export nutrients because of existing algae issues?

I have a 29 BC and have experimented w/ trying to grow things in the sump. I have a small viewing window in back that I enlarged by using a razor blade to scrape the paint off the glass on the back. Then put a clamp light with compact fluorescent on a timer offset from day lights (this helps w/ the ph drop that occurs at night) it does work, (not chamber one but two) the water cascades over and you will get growth. IMO it is not a great option. There is a website like "pimp my cube" or some such, and they sell an ingenious mod for BC to put in lights and frag rack etc. I have a chaeto ball in the tank itself just in the rear corner by the overflow outlet. It is not unsightly. Does the job of nutrient absorption and utilizes tank lights. There are some nice Macro algae available too, grape algae is my favorite. If you lived close I would give you some. Grows well, fish eat it like candy. Keep me posted.

i currently have some un- ID'd macro growing, rather quickly, but small. are you saying a ball in the bottom right? and i just realized that the light doesnt make it to the back compartments :-X i will google "pimp my cube" thanks

@ corailline not battling, just preventing any possible booms.

edit: wait DOES the light reach the back chambers?

Light does not enter the back chambers unless you put a light behind your tank. Verify it has a viewing window (mine had about 4 inch square viewing window that was unpainted, this I scraped from the outside of the back of the tank to allow MORE light to enter the rear of the tank from the clamp light I added to the wall behind my BC.

If you do not have a viewing window OR if you do not have an option to "pimp" the 8 gal, then you could "float" a chaeto ball in the display part of your tank it sinks to the bottom near the sump vents and will accomplish what you are trying to achieve.
