Thanks guys I bought the Coralife Super Skimmer 65model. I must say I have only had it set up for three days and I have already seen a major difference. All my old cyna and diatom probs look like they are leaving the tank and my water is crystal clear now. Very happy Very :) My mother gave me 100 dollars for my bday and told me to go buy the ipod I wanted... lol it went towards my new skimmer :p

There are a number of reefs that don't use a skimmer. Successful ones typically have low loads and lots of water changes to remove waste from the tank. They tend to be much harder to support. I don't believe that skimmers remove trace elements or iodine to any great extent. Skimmers primarily remove dissolved organic compounds or waste in suspension. Personally, I've had marine tanks on and off since the early 80s. I predate skimmers. I have seen a great improvement in water quality and success as skimmers became popular and more efficient.

There are many good articles on skimmers and IMO many benefits for most systems with no published negatives, but it isn't the only way to go.

    Have fun and good luck.
