yeah, thats an awesome direction, then if you want to max it out, get this

06 Ultra Premium LED DIY Kit with Dimmable Driver - Rapid LED

or the 12 led version and do a variety of violets and cyans/greens or reds

and the control them with a boostled.com typhoon controller unless ya wanna get a apex or something.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Yeah this has really helped. I like the price too.

I will have to research one that one. Basically I want more blues and whites right? few reds/violets and do I want green?

yeah,I'd consider the original kit, but change it to 8 whites, 4 cw, 4 nw, then 16 blues, 10 rbs, 6 blues, then add a 12 led system from bridgelux with a mix of violets, reds, cyan or green. and run them with a typhhon........or just get the reefbeeders and enjoy;)

Cheryl, I will just say this. Every person in my club that has gone all LED have either gone back to MH or T5 or doing combos of T5/LED. And all of those that are happy with their LEd's dont have SPS dominated tanks. Even LPS like Acans faded, and I have heard complaints about zoas not being happy either.

Most everyone that has gone with a combo is very happy. Dimmable is the only way to go, and 2 blues to every 1 white is the way to go. In combination with T5, you have great color options and better overall spread.

Check this out, my friend did an amazing job on this mod. just dont try not pay attention to the derailing nonsense.

That's why I'm saying it can be a difficult transition for some people. Acan's bleach easily. The LED's put out a lot of power, and that has to be taken into consideration. When I switched to LED, they had a lower PAR than the TEK fixture, but bleached LPS even with them raised higher than the TEK. Too much light is worse than not enough. Once I got it dialed in, everything has been doing great. LPS, NPS and SPS.

Cheryl are you abandoning me on the MH front and going to the LED side? LOL. You were one of my few saviours in this battle!

I am anxious to see what you think about it. I have been tossing the idea around but just not going to do it, right now the cost is the biggest factor. Plus as you know we dont have the best luck with our tanks, and we are basically going to have to start all over on our SPS tank as I basically neglected the tank and now everything is almost gone due to STN! Grrrrr!!

I know someone not terribly far away who might be willing to assemble a retro kit for you if that aspect was preventative.

    Beautiful coral Cheryl.

Yes I will most likely go LED on all of my tanks in the coming year. Definitely will change time frame is the issue.

This is the same issue I had when I went to T5. You read all of this information and most of it is from folks who have only been using the fixture short term or had it longer term and would not admit they were bleaching their coral with the light.

I started with a 6 bulb T5HO fixture a few inches above the water and am now using 4 bulbs 10 inches above the water.

I think there has been enough time now with the 3W LED to jump to using them. Just get a dimming fixture and start with a very low % and work your way up. I also think getting something like Reef Breeders Bridgelux with all of the different colors and adding purple and near UV supplementation is the way to go based on Shin's tank.
