Hi all! I came across a very healthy and beautiful Chevron Tang from an LFS for $40.00! I know I can talk the guy down to 30.00 for it since I've purchased a coral from him before.

My question is, will this guy do well in a 30g reef with one other reef fish (Flame hawkfish)? I'm only gonna keep 2 fish in the tank as I dont want water quality to be an issue for the corals later. The tang is a juvenile, possibly 2 1/2 to 3 inches from tail to mouth and very healthy with a real vibrant color!

    Thanks in advance!

JMO, but 30g is way too small for a chevron, they like room to swim!

Yeah, I kinda was thinking the same thing, those guys grow up to 12". It will be hard passing that great offer up. I've seen them range from 100.00 to 125.00. It's crazy, I've only seen them a couple of times from only a couple of LFS's.

How long do Chevron Tangs take to lose their brilliant orange colour and turn into adults with the dull dark colouration?? Does anyone have any ideas?

As they grow, they lose the intensity of the orange little by little. As soon as they hit adulthood, kiss the bright orange goodbye. The chevron loses it's brilliance in coloration as an adult. They look dull IMO after adolescence.

So how long does it take them to get to adolescence and adult form? are we talking a few months or years? Thanks!

from what i have seen once they hit the 5"-6" mark they start the horrible transition... but i think its horrible because the price you pay for that fish is so high, just for it to go and turn black on you. they still retain the patern under the black. it looks cool IMO.

and it also depends on how much you feed...

I would suggest buying the tang, keep it for a little so you can get some kind of enjoyment out of it, and then sell it and make your money back later before it gets to big.
