Hey everyone. So a few months ago I was searching my local forum and came across a free chiller. It said it was in the alley behind some guys friends house. It was posted at night and I saw it the next morning. So I thought what the heck I'll see if its still there. I drove 30 min in traffic and to my luck it was there. I loaded it up and brought it home. I emailed the guy and asked him what condition it was in and he told me he didn't know. It was a friend and he didn't know. So it's been sitting around for several months and I didn't know if it even worked. Tonight I got around to hooking it up and I hooked up the plumbing to a 10g bucket. I put water in the bucket and turned the pump on. Let it run a bit with a heater in the bucket. Plugged the chiller in and blamo. I compressor kicked on and it started to work. I am not 100% positive that it chills quite yet but that's all a good sign. Even if I have to have it serviced it will be cheaper than buying a new chiller.
I'm just super stoked that this thing kicked on and wanted to share the news.

Be careful of stray voltage that could be caused by small amounts of damage to it from being out side for so long.

Thanks Ryan, I just got out my volt meter and checked. I checked when the compressor was not on and it was at 108 volts. Turned off the pump and 0v. Waited till the compressor kicked on and tested again. Same 108v turned off the pump and back to 0v. Turns out the chiller is good but the pump I was going to use to supply the chiller is leaching a lot of stray voltage. Thanks for the heads up. Probably wouldn't have caught that till there was an issue.
Thanks man you saved me some grief.

Oh and the chiller works great. Chills the 10g bucket 2 degrees celcius in less than 3 minutes. Thats going to be great ony 125g. Super excited with this

Great to hear :). Get a new pump and you sound like you will good to go :). Stray voltage often goes unnoticed in tanks and can be quite devastating as well as frustrating.

Definitely! I have it running freshwater and vinegar right now to make sure it's clean when I'm ready to install.

    Thanks Steve

Yes, it's the Aqua Medic Titan 2000. I know it's a little big at 1hp but can't beat the price.

I seemed to think that there was something wrong with it that's why it was free. But everything checks out. No leaks. No stray voltage (thanks Ryan) and it actually cools really well. But time will tell and I will just let it run a few days and check it constantly before I hook it up.

Corals are going to be super happy this year. Every year around now things get a little po'd.

Nice score man. Too bad there wasn't a HVAC person kicking around that could give it a once over to notice anything before setting it up.

    Thanks nooze, yea I wish.

So what are the issues that could potentially be wrong with a chiller. I want to cover all my bases.
    -stray voltage- check
    -leaks- check
    -actually cools- check
That's all I got ATM. Anyone have anything else it could possibly be?
    Thanks for your help.
