I am going to pick up a chiller in the next few weeks. We have a 72 bowed with a 20 gallon sump. We also have about 150 lbs of LR in the tank. What size chiller would I need and any thoughts on brands??

The JBJ ARCTICA are the best I have ever found for a small unit .. The sizing will depend on you ambient temps and lighting and heat rise per hr.. and also installation with out more info I'd guess a 1/5th Hp on average for the tank that size .. P/M me maybe I can help you out more if you need ?

I did about 6 months of research on mine and came up with the Aqua Logic Trimline Chiller. as I decided to do my research without having money influence my decision. Basically you have a lot to look at such as drop in coil vs. pump fed, money, the amount of temperature you typically have to drop the tank on those hot days, where you plan on putting the chiller as it should not be in your stand unless you have air filtration openings, the electricity that the chiller will pull, (keep in mind if you are using pump fed the pump will cost money, run electricity, need cleaning, and if it in an internal pump it will slightly add to the increased temp of your tank), and lastly if you do not already have a controller will the chiller you are looking at need a controller to be added. Ohh and one last option on the chiller or controller you want to see if it is single vs. dual stage if you prefer it to control a heater in your tank for the winter months.

Sorry for the long reply. I went with the drop in trimline as aqua logic mostly deals in lab type scenarios and appears to be top of the line. Drop in coil as I have plenty room in my 40gal sump, I won’t have to clean the chiller itself and cleaning the coil is easy, they have great technical support, and no additional pump will be needed.
I guess simplicity was also played a huge roll in the chiller I went with. If you go with a more powerful chiller than what is recommended for your tank you will save some money in the long run on electricity as well.
