cleaner wrasse info

I bought a cleaner wrasse about 2 weeks ago so far its doing great i was wondering what kind of good info does anyone have on them

 

they don't typically last long in the home aquarium and it's a species that lfs shouldn't sell IMHO. Once they run out of parasites they usually starve slowly

 

I've kinda heard the same thing. In my fish book, the author does not recommend any sort of cleaner wrasse because of the food issue and that they don't seem to adapt well to the aquarium environment.

 

My experience with them is, you've got to make sure they're eating before you purchase them. They will eat mysis, and such, but make sure you see this, before making a purchase.
I had one for a year, and would never have Tangs without one in my tank.

 

If you have a problem with one feeding, get some beef heart and make it into a mush and the cleaners will love it. Remember that small ones need a proportionally smaller particle size as they have smaller mouths than other fish their size.

 

I use to have two blue and two yellow striped cleaners that lasted for a while, but my other fish did not like them. The cleaners would swim up to them and the bigger fish would dart off. Plus the cleaners will get sucked into overflows and die if you dont find them soon. I got tired of always looking for them. Cool fish to watch latch onto others, but dont miss.

 

I just got one today I have to watch them feed before I buy. Only 1 out five eat buy they all active
