Have/do you ever take out your LR and clean it up?

not normal but yes, take it out gently and shake it in a bucket of saltwater, or if your confident in your skimmer and flow rate shake it in the tank

I use a turkey Baster to blast stuff out of holes and a toothbrush to brush away anything that doesn't look like of should be there

I'm thinking I'll yank some of it out, and shake it in clean H2O...it's looking pretty dirty

if you have a extra power head plugg it in and use it like a fan "but in the water" and blast the debris away....

I just did the turkey baster method- blew off all the rock, made a big storm in the tank! I then did a partial water change, and let the skimmer take care of the rest. So far, so good.

you don't want to do that fresh water will kill anything living in the rock thats why it is best to use tank water. unless that is what you are aiming for.
it also could start a mini cycle.
