I have a 100 gal saltwater coral reef tank with live rock, an angel fish and 2 clown fish. It is a ten year old tank, but I am new to caring for it. I recently put some pickling lime in with the water and used too much, about 1/4 c., the next day it was still cloudy so I replaced the filter and checked the protein skimmer. Tonight I was topping the tank off and the top layer of water is very slimy, it is a clear slime and the fish and coral seem the same, but the live rock looks dusty compared to normal. I also bought a new kind of fish food that I have used for 2 days now. The pH, nitrates, and temp are all normal. Is my coral at risk? What could be causing this and how do I fix it? Should I try a 5 gal water change? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, New tank owner in Wyoming

The cloudiness and dustiness on the live rock could be from Calcium precipitation from the kalk (pickling lime) you added. If you get a turkey baster, it should blow off easily. Not sure what the slimy water is about. A water change never hurts. Don't forget to get the temp and salinity close and don't add too quickly. - Paul

The slimy water could just be pissed off SPS corals from the water changes in the stuff you added. When that happens to me I just drain it off into a cup before I start up the flow again. Otherwise you can try to catch it in a Brine Shrimp net. But in my experience it has been mostly harmless stuff.

It, the clear slime, may be the thin crust layer often experienced when dosing kalkwasser or equivalent...It looks like slime but isn't!
    Just a possibility!
Check your water parameters and be cautious of calcium, alkalinity, pH and magnesium levels, especially!
Any living animal could be at risk depending on how elevated or depleted your water parameters are and how quickly these levels changed!
If something is out of whack!!!!!! DO NOT, I MEAN DO NOT adjust the parameters quickly by making rash decisions and adding buffers etc. to rectify the problem....This will only compound the situation and make things drastically worse!
Don't freak out...make changes slowly, this will not only be safer for your inhabitants, but ultimately bring your tank back to a prime equillibrium!
    Good luck!
