closed loop flow

    hey guys.just finished my closed loop on my first tank(100g).everything was setup for iwaki 100rtl(2000gph) so i drilled 1.5 inch for intake and 4x1" for returns connected to super squirt ver3.because iwaki was to loud for my living room i changed it for reeflo snapper hybrid and here is my problem:)as you know reeflo pump has 2" in and 1.5"out....didnt want to drill new holes so my 1.5 intake is "reduced" to 2" at pump and pump outlet "reduced" to 1" to ss input.is it gonna work guys? because i think my flow is not good,barely see any water movements at surface.need some advice.thanks

    Do you have valves at each branch of the closed loop, or just the one before the manifold?

    yep i got them on every returns,drain and one at ss.6 total

    So your old pump had a 1.5" suction and your new pump has a 2" suction and you are using youe old intake of 1.5"???

    That's not a good way to go. You don't want to reduce intake. If you starve the suction you could run into cavitation... even if that is not happening, throttling a intake cause more loss than restriction outlet.

    A good thing is that your inlet is nice and straight. How many elbows are not in the pic from the tank?

    Wait a minute... where is the suction in the tank.... are you coming off the sump????

    you can see it in first pic on right side in the middle.....so i got 90deg elbow at intake than going straight down like 36inch,next 90deg elbow and pump.

    OK.. so my first suggestion woul dbe to call the pump maker and see if this is acceptable. I mean there are margins built in and this is not a very demanding application. Essentially zero head.

    To improve things you can still hook up a 2" line up to your 1.5" bulkhead. Yes the bulk head would still be a restriction, but you increase the volume and decrease the velocity in the line to the pump. It is a long line and will give more volume to the pump minimizing that 1.5" restriction.

    You seem to have streamlined your plumbing as much as possible. It is very hard to get a ton of flow from closed loops. I mean take 2 Vortech MP40s... that 6000 GPH of flow. Now go fing a pump that will do that in your closed loop. Don't fret surface movement... it's over rated. Your pump is doing what it can. At best is is only going to do so much and I still see a lot of powerheads in closed loop set ups.
