A closed loop is used for circulation or you could through a inline filter on it if you wanted to. You simply have a pipe that connects to the intake side of a pump which draws water from the tank and you have a pipe or pipes returning from the exhaust side of the pump back into the tank. I positioned my returns in each corner of my tank as to get rid of the ugly powerheads! I am getting a SCWD this week so that it alternates between sides and gives it more of a wave effect. I really like it. I promise to have the pics up shortly!

You could also make it draw water directly from the tank. I think I have a couple of drawings on page one?
Some people put the pump behind the tank where the tank meets the stand.

Just was wondering...this is in addition to the circulation from overflow into and returned from the sump, correct?

Also, would the pump used for this be in the sump? or should it be situated behind the tank? It doesn't look like it would need to be submerged?

This is added circulation and would need an external pump.

I would do a closed loop with a SCWD wavemaker on connected to a Mag 12 pump. The pump can be in the sump or out of the sump. Basically a closed loop draws water from the main tank into the pump and pumps it back into the tank through the pump outflow.
