Hello everyone, new to the 3REEF chat room! I have a 55 gallon saltwater system with both live coral and fish. My tank has been established for about a year and just recently I have really cloudy water after a 30% water change. I have had a little cloudiness before but nothing like this. I recently had a clam die in my tank and was quick to get him out but think it has something to do with the cloud. My tank is running with these systems. A deltec protein skimmer, eheim filter, NextReef up-flow filter with bioplastics, Marine land bio-wheel filter with carbon bags and PhosBan bag, two power heads and AquaticLife HID, T5, and LED light system. I do at least a 20 to 30% water change weekly and usually do a good job at keeping the water up to par.

    Bioplastics

Ok, I cleaned the NextReef filter and bioplastics during my last water change. I guess it made the bioplastics break out. I am new to bioplastics and PhosBan so still learning. Thanks for the info and hope this counts as an emergency. If not sorry to post!

I posted with the same worries awhile ago lol.... for future reference I usually" clean the biopellets" in some old tank water...freshwater will kill the bacteria your cultivating with them and you'll start over again.using old tank water will preserve ur bacteria and just rinse awayy all the nasties

I had the same problem, wasnt running bio pellets or anything, but just happened. Smelled kind of funny, lasted for about a week, hated it! I was told to aerate the water really good because the fish might suffocate due to the lack of oxygen from the too much bacteria. I still dont know that caused it, and I lost a shrimp less than a week after due to the stress...

Welcome to 3reef btw, and, Okinawa! You must be surrounded by reefs, no? Is there a lot of local fish store there? Are you in the military?

Sounds like there might of been a small chemical difference between the old and new water. It can happen, a small water change and running high quality carbon will help out.

Okinawa is really saturated with coral reefs and many species of tropical fish. I really enjoy diving just to see all the diffrent types of corals. Yes, there are many local fish supply shops on Okinawa. The biggest I've seen or been to is called Pet Box in American Village. I however, do most of my shopping online at Marine Depot due to the yen rate and unable to read kanji.

    ^Sounds a LOT of fun!

You're worried about reading kanji? Okinawa is one of the most places that are exposed to English speaking people! Youll find someone who can accommodate you, I guarantee!
