    Yep, it needs to be changed much more frequently than that. Trapped detritus still breaks down into DOCs, thereby fueling nitrate production; that may also be the cause for a bacterial bloom.

    Personally, I don't use mechanical filtration for that very reason. Also, most of what gets trapped is food for something in your tank. :)
