Okay, so after watching my tank for a while and seeing how my existing fish act and how much space is being occupied, I have decided that I have room for a clown fish/anenome.

I cleared away some tonga rock, and reorganized a side of my tank where I can have room for a small anenome that could host a clown. There are no corals around that could touch it and any corals that are in the vacinity, are suspended above the anenome on tonga branches.

    My question:
What clown and anenome would you guys recommend?
I need a smaller anenome that could fit in about a 5"x5" x 5"h area?
I want the anenome to remain small and the clown fish to not get too big. The tank is a 20g tall so i dont have a lot of room for a big clown. The smaller clown I saw at the LFS would more than likely get attacked by the goby (these clowns were about 3/4") I need a clown that would stay around 2" max

    Thanks as always in advance.

I have a lot more coral in the tank now and will post more pics when I can!

What kind of lighting do you have? Good flow is also important, but if you already have corals, I'm sure you'll be fine.

I had great luck with a nice bubble tip and maroon clown. Both the clown and the anemone are very colorful - beautiful combination. He's not a gold stripe, but has developed some gold in his white cheek stripe - the other two stripes are white - all markings perfect :cheesy: He took up with it the very next day after introducing both.

Keep in mind that just because you put it somewhere, doesn't mean that's where it'll stay. You may have the perfect area in your tank, and it may take to it, or may not. My BTA stays put, but did move around quite a bit until he found his current "home" - which, by the way, isn't where I wanted it to stay ::)

    - edit - You may want to get a wild caught clown fish. Tank raised sometimes take longer to host, and some never will.

I agree - they will move until they find a place that is perfect!

I have a bulb with a tank bred ocellarus - not guaranteed they will host a bulb but mine eventually did.

What kind of goby do you have that will attack the clown?

I was wondering that too. Most I've seen just scoot around on the bottom, hop over rocks, in their own silly world leaving everyone else alone. Or hide in a cave.

Engineering goby. He tends to get aggressive every once in a while.

Thanks for the advice guys. I actually didnt want a BTA for some reason. I guess just the look doesnt appeal to me IMO.

What about small carpet anemones? Anyone have experience with those?

how large is the engineer? I really don't think (but can be wrong of course) a clown will be bullied by one unless its over 6"!?!?

The engineer goby is about 5"

He only nips at fish that tend to come near the entrances of his tunnels. Hes calmed down quite a bit lately though.
