That is correct, However they are very docile as in not crazy swimming styles. When you purchase an acanthurus you need to watch its swimming styles, while most small in stature they need a huge tank, or some large smaller...

However even in my 125 G, mind you this tank is more then twice your size my 5" naso tang is being a brat towards anything in the tank. I got this fish from DFS only half a year ago. And it was only 2.25" ... They grow fast.

I'm going to keep my mouth shut on this one. I have been known to go a little overboard in the past but I can't help slapping my forehead on this one. Enjoy putting that fish in a tank that is about 10 % of what that tang really needs. When he is pacing in circles, that does mean he is happy and just swimming. It means he is looking for a way out to get to bigger water. Hope you enjoy the fish before he dies from stress. Sorry to sound rude but.......

Maybe you should read the entire thread before you open your mouth. This fish is in here temporary, maybe a month. Never thought I would get bashed for a great purchase. I understand some of you are giving advice but when people get rude that's when I'm done. I'm excited about the deal I got and I love looking at my tank everyday. I posted this thread for all to enjoy and to share my enjoyment but I guess that was thinking outside the box. To all with nice and helpful comments, thank you.

You took an open water fish and put him in a 34 gallon tank. A clown tang isn't even really a reef fish. They are a warm water fish but smend more of their time swimming in open water and not throught the nooks and crannies of a reef. Take an active dog and put him in a very small kennel for a month without being released and see how that dog does. A great purchase? What is your definition of a great purchase. You have 2 tangs in a 34 gallon tank. Not sure how that can be considered great but more power to you. Next question! Your signature mentions patience. Could you not wait until you got a bigger tank? BTW that Red Sea tank is in Liters and not gallons. That is about a 60 gallon tank. Once again, too small for the smallest of clown tangs. I'm not trying to bash you but good grief, think of the lives you are tossing in the tank. BTW, I don't think you will be able to produce enough oxygen in a 34 gallon tank for those 2 tangs. You don't have enough surface area. it's not just swimming room you have to worry about. Next, you will not be able to feed that tang enough to keep him healthy because of the water volume. They need to eat constantly and they eat a ton. You will not be able to give him proper nutrition and still maintain parameters, especially with the filtration you have going on now and with that red sea. (skimmer isn't near big enough) Once again, I'm not trying to bash. A really good idea for forums such as this and others is to use the search function. You will find thread after thread suggesting against a clown tang. BTW this is one of my favorite fish and I don't have one. Do you know why? My 120 gallon tank with 120 gallon sump aren't big enough to support it.

I read it, and it seems like you got great advice from the people experienced with this fish. It is going to create havoc and really limit your options in the future, even after your upgrade. But good luck to you, it is a cool looking fish. Honestly, I think he was only trying to help you alleviate a future disaster. I'll get one of these guys when I get a 600 up and running;)

In the future, when posting new fish that obviously need to live in much larger tanks, say in the post your plans (in this case to try it in a 175). All you said was it was going into the 55, which is obviously still well short. So I can see why you got such a response.

People are looking out for both you as a hobbyist so there is not discouragement from either fish dying, or killing other fish from being in too small a tank, and they are looking out for the living animal that we are responsible for once we put them into our homes.

Back OT, that is a beautiful fish, and the tank looks great!
