I have read that a sign towards clownfish pairing is quivering/shaking. I just acquired a pair and have been watching them closely to see which one is quivering and becoming the less dominant fish. The problem is that both quiver at each other, Is this normal? I am a little confused since I see them both quivering, instead of just one

    Thanks

It's just how they swim. You'll be able to tell which one is the dominant female later; it will be the bigger one.

Clowns twitch for several reasons. It's mainly dominance or courting/mating, and also aggressiveness to other fish, or me doing a water change (they always always do it after a water change...)

When they finally pair up, one will end up being around 30% smaller than the clown that gets to be the female, and they will keep that proportion no matter how much they grow.

All in all, clowns just twitch.

Interesting. I did not know clownfish do that. I have a mating pair of gold severums (FW) that quiver at each other when they are about to lay more eggs. Fish are strange.

Mine do it all the time. What's interesting is the smaller of the two is the dominant one. I guess she will eventually grow bigger than the other one.

They are definitely doing that twitching swim to each other. Like I mentioned the only thing that I saw that was kind of weird to me, was that they have both done the twitching (I expected only one). Well hopefully I don't have two females, considering I got them kind of big (about 1.5")

Here is a picture (bad quality, these things don't stop moving :p)

Mine both "twitch." The smaller one twitches as much as the larger one!

lol.. I had to reply. Those look like my babies. I breed Clowns and sell them wholesale. That looks like my chocolates. They will both "twitch". Its a characteristic. One will eventually be the Dominant Female.
