    When they are born they are gender neutral (diamorphic), with the potential to become either. The most successful will become the dominate female, second in line will become the dominate male, all others can be consider immature males within the harem.

    If the dominate female dies the dominate male can become a female. Once a female it will not turn back into a male. A male becomes a female but the female can not become a male again (except in a few rare documented cases).

    If you leave a male alone with no female present, it will become a female so the next fish you add should be a juvenile.
