My Desk top has been rendered useless. Please help

I currently have a P4 3.6G PC with 1.5G RAM, Brand new Power supply, Brand new 500G HDD.

What is happening is when the system boots is goes past the post and loads windows. At what seems to be a random time the system freezes. Total lock up. Some times Windows is up and I've launched software, some times it will lock up before windows it up.
CPU heat sync was clogged full but now temp does not exceed 30C
AGP graphics card's heat sync was also jammed with dust.
It appear to run fine in Safe mod.
This leads me to believe it may be the video card. (just upgraded my Monitor to a 22" LCD) but It's AGP so replacement is a waste of money

Any help would be very help full

    thanks
    J

if it runs in safe mode but not normal mode it's likely a driver issue

Boot into safe mode, look at device manager for any duplicate entries in the display adapter section, remove them and reboot that will cause it to reinstall the video drivers do the same in the monitor catagory and see if that helps

unless your video card is broken its not the problem. video cards are mad so they cant go past there capacity, that is resolution wise. since the card doesn't power the monitor it doesn't matter what size it is. now if you overclocked it that might be another matter.
my advice boot into safe mode, back up data, reinstall.

    reinstall,
    usually fixes all

edit: try irafs suggestion first although the device driver almost never did squat for me except in one printer case

I would check the refresh rate on your graphics card to see if it is compatibe with the monitor. You can change it to the desired one for your monitor.

You could try a system restore. Sounds like a driver issue.

I would reformat and have a clean start, if the north bridge has a fan also it might just be bad and need to be replace, they are known for causing issues and blue screens
