    I would only slightly siphon the top layer of sand so you don't disturb it much. Siphoning sand can actually cause your nitrates to rise. Maybe once a month or so just skim the sand if it is dirty. Get some nessarious snails for it.

    Maybe that's why my nitrate level spiked. Several days ago I changed 10% of the water and siphoned the sand a little bit. Hmmm....
