there is not limit to coral in a tank, whatever you can fit you can put in. because corals put no bioload on the tank actually every piece of coral filters the water minutely.

so as long as there is a spot on the live rock it will be fine. when i first set up the tank should i look at how big it will get or just get everything i think looks good lol.

The only limit is the competition for space. The LPS corals will fight for space and damage each other unless they are the same species. The softies will try and overgrow each other.

I would say both. Plan your tank based on the corals you like the best and go from there. Enjoy the process it can be most rewarding and fun.

I've seen corals spit out what I thought was poop. I would think it would add to the bioload, or am I totally off base on that?

Yeah, there is no real limit on the number of corals you can have. You do have to keep in mind their space reqs though, not just what they look like during the day but how big their feeder tentacles get at night. Like 2in10 said, the only limiting factor is competition for space.

Try and research the corals you intend to add to your tank. Even small corals can have sweeper tenticles that extend several inches and sting neighbors.

The only thing I'd ass is when one coral dies, it can take others with it. If densely packed, one coral dying could cause a chain reaction that crashes your tank. This isn't particularly common, but can happen. So, I think there is reason to wait to add lots of corals, until you are comfortable with coral husbandry and your tank is very stable. Otherwise, as others have said, there is no limit other than space and access to other required environmental parameters such as light, flow, food...
