I wanted to ask all the experienced guys/gals for a cost estimate. I have a 30 gallon, but I am already hoping to go much larger in the future. I love tangs, and I can't have any in my 30. How much would you say a 100+ reef tank with lights for any and all corals be? I think I will start putting a little aside now....

    Thanks!

Spending 3-5,000.00 would be sweet on the set-up alone. Coral and inhabitants are a whole different story. Depending on the approach you take it could be cheaper or never stop costing you frustration and money.

I spent about $2000 on my 55gal. setup including corals and fish. This is a rough estimate as I am continually spending money on my tank. That size tank will be more expensive as will the lighting, you will probably want to go with MH. A sump/refugium while not necessary, is highly recommended. A skimmer for that size tank can easily go $300-$400 if not more. Then there are all the little extras that make having a large tank easier, like a auto top off system and Ca reactor. I wouldn't worry about the price of corals or fish as you should be adding them over a period of time, which will defray the costs. Mission is right though, you can easily spend anywhere between $3000-5000. A lot depends also on whether you can get used equipment or not, and what you already have.

Of course it depends on a million different choices you will make. MH are expensive but I would only go with them, no worry about what corals you can house then. You can use all base rock and save a TON of money. I would start looking for good used stuff now and stockpile that way, you could save tons if you have the time and planning necessary. But for a money estimate, if you don't want to be restricted, 5 grand would be a good number.

Best to do it little by little, unless you are wealthy, which I am not. Constantly check for sales and research in the mean time to be certain that this is what you want!

I have 7 g in my tank It is 90gal. Now I want a240 or 300. Rock was the knife that hurt. Shipping is about 30 to 40 % of the cost. I do have a small view of the ocean in my living room in colorado at 6700 feet above sea level. Kind of sweet.
