So I cleaned my return and removed some unneeded in-line eqip such as a check valve along with cleaning my return nozzle that had over a year of build up. Plugged everything in and whoa, did my flow increase. Now my CPR overflow is the loudest thing ever. My tank is in my living room so this is a problem. Any tips on how to quiet this thing down without reducing the flow again?

    Cheers!

Oh, and when I get the house, built in overflow on the next tank along with a fish room! ;D

I do 2 things to quiet mine, first I placed a piece of clear mesh from BRS into the inlet behind the teeth to diffuse the incoming water sound some, seems to help a bit.

Second I adjusted the flow on my drain and the height of the air nozzle so that the water level reaches an equilibrium between the level in the tank and in the back chamber of the overflow. If you decide to do this you need to be very careful about adjusting your drain flow lest you cause a flood.

Between 1 and 2 you can get the overflow to be nearly silent, it just takes some messing around, in the future I'll definitely have my tank drilled if i want a sump.

Mine is now utter silent. I used some 1" pvc pipe and built a single bean animal. I also replaced my tubing from the overflow to the sump, with PVC pipe as well. It was quiet enough my wife called me at work the next day cause the thought something wasnt turned on. I know pictures pictures. I'll get some later tonight or tomorrow and get them up.

the loudest part of my overflow is the drain from the box to the sump. I made it completely silent by taking a piece of sponge (very large weave, so water can flow through it easily) as stuck it in the box until it just touches the top of the drain. Now the water flows through the sponge, into the box and down the drain without making a sound. An additional plus is that it added another stage of mechanical filtration to my tank which actually prevents a lot of algae from going down into the sump. (my tang is a pig and throws nori everywhere)

I did roughly the same with a filter sock, I placed it plus or minus water level so a majority of the ater actually overflows it, but it doesnt really catch much but big pieces & do good bit of bubble control, but that was the goal I was trying to achieve.
