I recently got a very small royal gramma thats really messin with me.I've had him for about 2 weeks. All tank params are fine, corals, inverts and all other fish are fine.

This fish looks healthy, swims fine, breathes fine, eats good. But sometimes for hours on end he will swim funny, sideways, upside down, loop de loops, corkscrews, you name it.Then he returns back to normal.I have caught one of my clowns chasing him a couple times, but both clowns and the gramma are only about an inch and 1/4 big.Very small.

Sometimes he hides in the rock and from the research i've done, thats normal. But this swimming thing has got me at a loss.I go to bed at night thinking he's a goner, but when I turn the lights on the next day,he's one of the first out and about beggin for food, lol.

Is this normal for gramma's?Is he sick or just looney?

I have never seen them do that out in the open but mine does it wherever there is a cave or overhang. This is normal for them in the wild in those places. They are also shy so it will spend a fair amount of time in hiding.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Normal in my opinion. They are just not your routine fish. If I removed rocks from my tank for some reason I always had to check later to see if the RG was swimming in the new container.

Yeah,i've also seen it in a cave turning around, sometimes positioning itself upside down,?lol.

I would think if there was a bacteria or bladder illness,he wouldn't eat like he does or go back to swimming normal for such long periods of time.No sign of external disease, his appearance is very vivid and healthy looking, fins good,no crooked back,no pinched belly, eyes look good too.Mabey he's just mentally challenged?lol

Funny you mention that, when he was transfered from the cube to the 55,i lost him in the cube, searched everywhere, several hours later after the rock was all in,he was out and swimming in the 55,goofy fish.I think he enjoys keeping me worried.

LOL,yeah he does that "giant gaping mouth thing" to my firefish (who couldn't care less) all the time, but yes that is the style of swimming i'm getting, just at times it's alot more radical than that. Thanks John and Cheryl,if thats how they are,i'm cool with it,it gives him some personality,a very wierd personality, lol.

Mine is upside down or on it's side more than upright. It's just normal swimming behavior for them.
