I ordered a cuc from reef cleaners. Should have weeks ago, but I found 2 turbo snails dead. Pretty sure they died over the past few days. This was a used tank so I don't know if it was dosed with copper, at any point, but I have had a few hermits and another turbo for at least a month in this tank. A cleaner shrimp and 3 emerald crabs, one who just molted. EmeraldCrabs and shrimp have been in at least 2 weeks also.

I went to petco and 2 other lfs to buy a copper test kit, everyone seems to be out of it.

The test kit selection here is terrible!!!

Also I bought these turbos at the same time from same place, and after the fact I read some reviews of the store and it seems they have a bad rep.

If there was a copper problem, how long would it take to affect them?

Also have Xenia and some zoas that are doing great.

Should I drive to find a copper kit? I know I should have tested earlier, but I just came across a thread on copper. My cuc will be here tomorrow.

If there were a copper problem, it wouldn't have just been the two snails. The emeralds, shrimp, hermits, and the other turbo would've been affected too.

And it definitely wouldn't have survived a molt.

I don't think you have copper problem. Sometimes, snails just die.

Sometimes hermits or some shrimp species will kill them...

As it has been said if you had a copper problem non of your inverts would have survived past a week or two. Snails Die all the time, in fact IMO they are one of the least hardy of all the species we keep in our tanks. I buy a hundred of them because I know I am going loose at least a 1/4 to 1/2 over the next 6 months to a year or so.

Most snails available in this hobby are cool or even cold water species. When kept in a reef tank with a temperature of 80 degrees it shortens their life span considerably. Some snails when kept at 65 to 75 degrees can live as much as 2 to 3 years and when kept at 80 degrees only live 12 to 16 months.

While I had my seahorse tank up I had some snails in there for 2 years that I put in when I first started it because that tank was kept at 72 to 74 degrees. But the snails I bought for my reef tank at the same time barely made it past 6 or 8 months at 80.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
A tank that has been exposed to copper treatments is not a death threat to that tank or inverts that maybe introduced to the system after the system has been throughly cleaned. The amounts of copper that could possibly leach from the silicon is not going to kill off inverts IME.

Snails die, and in my opinion they require a longer acclimation than most fish.

Okay, I just didn't know if that was a bad sign, and nothing I have read said how long copper would take to affect the inverts.

I really think those snails came to me with problems, they really didn't move too much. dont think ill be visiting that store again.

    But the hermits are fine.
