It's not when they die it is when they feel threatened they expel their digestive track and that toxin will wart off any enemy that is attacking them. If your tank was small it may kill a few fish. I have one and enjoy him very much and as long as you have a peaceful tank and no invert eaters ;D you will be fine.

Caution must be taken when adding a cumcumber as "otty" stated they can emitt toxins and ruin your tank water very quickly, and can be VERY deadly to the other fishes/inverts , remember YOU have a "closed" system

when cucumbers feel or are picked on they will "expell" their insides and and toxins along with it .

ive had one' i was always "uneasy" about having it in my tank '

Watch the yellow tang, if he starts to pick on it you had better get one of them out.

i have had 2 cucumbers in my 29 gallon tank for 2 years now with no trouble. all the fish seem uninterested in them. i would keep it if i were you. i think they're pretty beneficial.
