I have a 46 gallon bow with a Current Sunpod with 2 150 watt 14,000 bulbs. I have no heat issues maybe because of the fan in back. Does anyone have this fixture or similar with 2 250 watt bulbs over a 46 gallon. Not sure if it would cause a heat issue even with the fan or if a chiller would be required. I keep sps, lps, softies, mushrooms. Everyone seems happy but I think the sps would be happier they are about 8-10 inches from light.

Hello, this is my first post. Heres my halide lighting story. First off my tank is a 4ft 55 gallon. I had a current nova extreme pro 6x54w and I couldn't keep my temp below 85 with fans so I just got a chiller. I then purchased the current 2x150w sunpod and it ran cooler than my t5 fixture. I managed to do without the chiller and just use fans. I just wasn't happy with the light from the 150 and soon replaced it .I now run a current 2x250w on my 4ft 55 gallon and am using the standard mounting legs ( although the 250 comes with the hanging kit too). It was soon apparent the chiller was going to have to come back. Even three fans couldn't tame the temperature. With three fans it went into the mid 80s and leveled out. My chiller (1/10hp) turns on about every 15 minutes. My ambient room temp is 76 degrees and I keep my tank at 78. It is in a 15x20ft room. The clams and sps love the light ( heck I even grow sps on the bottom). But not to say it cant be done, I just couldn't run mine without a chiller. Hope this helps you make your decision.

if you want to increase your lighting a little bit (and be able to run without a uv shield) you should look at the hamilton technology setups. I have a 2 x 175 mh with a 96 watt actinic over my 50 gallon and the temp stays steady at 80 with no chiller. The 2 x 4inch fans are beasts and the way the fixture is setup is pretty nice for keeping the temp down. My corals (even the acros on the bottom) seem to be really happy.

That you for all the good info. I think then I am safer with the 150 watts. I don't want to buy a chiller.

i'm running 4 54watt t5's on a 55 gallon with a sump with 65watts of pc.i have the lights on legs so the bulbs are 4 inches from water.not one single fan on my whole system.natural air flow keeps the water temp down.air can flow through the 4 inch gap between the water and bulbs.also i left 1inch gaps on the hoods top so air could contact the reflectors.

The reason why your tank ran hot with the T5HO's is because that 6x54w is way too much light for a 55g. A 4x54w T5HO is too much light for a 55g.

dual 150w MHs dont even touch a 4x54w T5HO in intensity, nor does a 2x250w MH.

I just bought 3 of the 24" sunpod 250w MHs for a tank Im building, I bought them for ease of use and the shimmer effect from the MH's, but I will also be using T5HO's to bump my intensity up.
