Just a quick question i have been batteling a bad cyano problem for a few weeks now. I'm starting to take action at getting it to go away. So my first measure is more flow so i ordered a hydro evo 1050. Ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, all 0.

i have my lights schedule on from 12pm to 9pm and moonlights on from 9pm to 12pm. Between 8-12 the tank has no lights except for NSL

but my main question is, why does it all go away at night? right now my rocks and sand are free from cyano but as soon as the lights go on, it all comes back

I think that it's because cyanos feed off of light, amongst other things.

Natural sunlight is a huge no-no for marine aquariums. As I mentioned to you before, unless that sunlight comes from above and through glass that does not have a UV protective coating, it's going to cause nothing but algae problems.

So, that being said, block the sunlight from reaching your tank, reduce phosphates (test your r.o. water for phosphates while you're at it), cut back on feeding, make sure your skimmer is working properly.

I am in the same boat, but no natural sunlight hits my tank. Does this cyano growth indicate that I should clean out my canister filter, replace media, sponges, etc? I only use the filter as a giant media reactor with as follows:

    Media sponge
    Bellaphos
    Carbon
    Media sponge

Are you sure it's not just the spectrum of the lighting that makes it look like the cyno has gone? I have a little cyno in my sand and when the daylights go off and the actinics are just on, the sand looks like there's no cyno on it. It grows fast, but it doesn't disappear and regrow everyday, that just doesn't make much sense and isn't practical.

Those sponges need to be cleaned bi-weekly if not weekly, depending on how much "gunk" they accumulate. Read the article I gave Puffer chick.
