    I have 3 blue-legged hermits...are those the same as blue-footed?

Today I pulled out that piece of rock and scraped off as much of it as I could while not harming the zoas

    I also did about a 2g (about 10%) water change....let's what happens

try to increase your flow. im batteling a cyano issue right now i had a single vortech mp20 running in my tank as the only flow, all my parameter readings showed 0. Just last night i added an extra powerhead, hydro evo 1050, and im already seeing a decrease of cyano and im hoping it will all go away, i may have to put up a gue if this doesnt do the trick

    good luck :D

I'll be purchasing a K-Nano too.....anyone heard of the attachment for the maxi-jets that turn them into more of a wavemaker?

*shrug* I had cyano growing on the inside of my MP40W. I had it growing in my return lines. I had it growing on rocks directly in the flow of the returns...

In my experience flow has nothing to do with cyano, not directly at least.

Areas of low flow result in detritus build up, which will increase your nutrient levels. Increasing over all flow in the tank to reduce these dead spots will help with all algae problems, but cyano doesn't mind high flow - in fact mine seemed to thrive in it.

    I battled it 3 ways:

    1. Mechanical removal with a toothbrush connected to a siphon line.

    2. Flow and regular "blasting" the dead areas with a turkey baster to kick up detritus. (weekly)

    3. Chemical - when it was almost gone and the nutrient levels dropped off I used Blue Vet Red Slime Remover. Followed directions, did a couple major water changes... that killed off every last bit. I followed that with a Phosban reactor running Seachem PhosGuard. for about 3 months.

The reactor's been off for about 3 months now and all seems well.

Ultimately I think the cyano was a result of adding too large a bioload too early in a newly established tank. Eventually the live rock would kick in and cycle fully and the cyano would probably have been self limiting and eventually die off... but that could take 6-8 months maybe more. I didn't like the look and did the extra work to battle it, with no harm done to the tank.

Good luck with yours. The Red Slime Remover worked great, but you have to address the root cause first or else it's just a bandaid.

I think mine may have been attributed to the same thing possibly....stocking too much too quick. I already do the baster thing blasting detritus etc

Thanks for the help....will let you know how it turns out

Ok, so after scraping some of the red slime, I did a small water change (about 10%). Today I ordered a K-Nano and also redirected the maxi-jet for the time being. I also started running carbon and a poly-filter. Also, smaller feedings, and no mysis shrimp for the candy cane for a while.

How does this sound for pro-active measures?
