I noticed that I started getting cyano after trying out cyclop-eeze. I have stopped using that as food. I also cut my lights back from 8 hours to 6.5 hours. Moon lights were also cut back from 4 hours to 2 hours. Fuge light is now on 24/7 as opposed to an alternate cycle. I will be doing a 15G water change in my 75G tonight. I have airline to manually remove the cyano from the two small patched I have. Once the cyano has stopped growing I may hit the tank with a small dose of chemiclean to kill spores. I know flow is not the problem. I have to assume the cyclop-eeze was really making my nitrates go nuts as well as phosphates.

I don't have any readings as of yet.

Besides what i am doing now, does anyone have any suggestions?

    Are you carbon dosing?

If so you may want to see if that is causing a problem with cynobacteria.

    Nope, no carbon dosing.

It has to be the cyclopeezes.. Only makes sense.. More nutrients added than the usual load.. Maybe feed less of it.... Give the system some time to catch up to the new cyclopeezes nutrients being added.

Looks like you have it all covered.. Chemi-clean works great. But I can't use my skimmer for a few days.. Anyway, let us know how it turns out.

That is the only thing that has changed in my tank.

I sucked out the cyano and did a 5gallon water change. I'm going to do a water change each time I see cyano.

How does that cause cyano? Wondering because I started running carbon again and I'm having a cyano outbreak....but I never linked the two.

using carbon - is not what is meant by carbon dosing

Carbon dosing refers to using a product designed to increase the amount of available carbon in the water, which encourages additional bacteria to be present ( carbon being the building block on which all life is based, means that the amount of bacteria that can be present in our systems is limited by the amount of free carbon)

    carbon dosing is achieved using
    Vodka
    Sugar
    Vinegar
or a combination of the above 3 products
also - commercial products - example Bio Fuel from Brightwell

nothing at all to do with granular activated carbon as used in filters or reactors

Some individuals that have had no problems with cyanobactera began to see blooms a couple months after beginning dosing. I have also seen reports of this with dosing of amino acids as well. Sugar, vodka really made no difference in the carbon source. Some people reported that after tappering down the dosing and discontinuing they saw a dramatic decrease in the ammount of cyanobacteria. Some thoughts were that you get to a point were the bacteria are saturated and the left over carbon goes on to feed the cynobacteria. I will try to mark some threads that I have seen. Having 0 values and no phosphates across the board and having cyanobacteria is not uncommon.

I dosed amino acids as well for a short time, had a great skimmer and saw an increase in cyanobacteria. I dicontinued it and the cyanobacteria died away.

Crystalline powder Vitamin C dosing is also a source of carbon. I learned this the hard way. I had to reduce my dosing in half after the dreaded white film started to form on the water, but fortunately it didn't last. I also started feeding cyclopeeze about 2 weeks ago, but I don't feed it every time. I try to vary the diet between mysis, brine, spirulina brine, cyclopeeze and sporadically some dry seaweed for my tang.

After adding cyplopeeze to the diet though, i have noticed that my green dust algae has increased, and recently bought a BRS dual reactor that I got today in the mail, specifically for this reason.

I don't know if there's a serious correlation, but I hope not. All my fish like the cyclopeeze a lot.
