I was playing around with the camera today and was able to capture a good shot top down of a piece of liverock in the back of the aquarium. As you can see it is becoming encrusted with coralline very nicely but also has a red algae on it which the coralline is slowly growing over top of. I reached down to see if it was cyano and it isnt exactly slimy I would describe it to be more of a velvety kind of feeling. Just moving water around down not dislodge it but if you press hard enough you can almost peel it off in a sheet that remains intact. Is this some sort of cyano it is a lower flow area in direct light or something else?

Cyano grows over the top of everything and basically nothing over it because it grows so quickly. The maroon is a type of coralline. There is yellow and orange like the maroon.

So that is another type of coralline?? I figured being softer and able to scrape it off would rule out coralline

I think it is or at least that is all I have ever heard it called. It does seem to act like coralline in light preference although I think it can stand a little bit stronger light. It grows best for me in areas that coralline does but only on the rocks and plastic. I have not had any grow on the glass.

hmm only crabs I have are various hermits and then of course all the snails, they crawl on it but never seem to eat it.

well if its not cyano then I guess there really isnt a reason to be concerned about it. thanks again you seem to find all my post

I've had red coralline, and green too. The coolest was red and green striped.

    +1 no worries!
