I did a hard cycle with a dead shrimp for the market until I reached ammonia level of almost 2. Took out the shrimp that just about fell apart. Then I let the tank just run. All I had in my tank was live sand. I kept testing levels about every day or 2 then I did a few small water changes until my level of ammonia hit .025 then I bought my live rock and prepped it, placed it in my tank and started testing again every day or 2. my ammonia levels peaked at about 1 and then started to drop. After they went down all the way and my nitrate was about 10 I started adding cleaners.

Thats the long cycle process but it should pay off with less problems in the long run. I was always told go slow with saltwater tanks and it will pay off.

I also use the cocktail shrimp method, used it a few times and it works a treat. Chuck it in a net, let it decompose and remove when it has turned to a gooey mess! Sit back and let your tank do its thing and before you know it the tank has cycled, best thing is you dont have to put damsels in the tank (unless you want them of course! ;) )

When i cycled my new tank - i used live rock and live sand - and i added some live bacteria i bought from my lfs to my filters. I then droped some food in the tank to rot. I let the algae bulild up till it turned green. I cleaned the tank and then added my fish.
Not one single death and this took about 2 weeks max.

    I tend to agree.

Using live fish to cycle a tank is cruel and not needed IMO.
I cycled mine with the LR + shrimp method (well piece of shrimp anyway) and my tanks been up about 8 months now.
