It may stress the Ocellaris to split them up. Generally speaking, Ocellaris clowns are the most dormant of all Clownfish and usually pose no problem. I would keep them. They're great community fish.

I purchased these clownfish at separate times so technically they are not a true matted pair. Would the little one be ok if I remove the bigger one?

Clowns mate over time, often a short period of time. You don't have to put them in the tank at the same time. Chances are good that if they have been together for a while (sounds like they have) that they are a mated pair now and it would possibly be stressful to split them up.

I don't want to lose both clownfish by removing the one. Has that ever happened to anyone on here?

Never has happened to me, but I have never thought of splitting up my pair. If I had to get rid of one, I would take the pair back to the LFS and keep them together. I wouldn't even consider it.

I have decided to put the large female Clown in my in-tank refugium which he could be there for maybe a week just to see if the other clown still eats and acts normal and if he does then I will remove the large clown give back to LFS and get a Fairy Wrasse. Fairy Wrasses are very peaceful and my Clown could give it a heart attack. I figure that my Flame Angel that dies probably did not pick on any corals because he wasn't eating at all. No more Flame Angels.

You need to stop playing GOD.. plan more carefully and place fish in order of dominance the least aggressive to the most at the end. If you have an overly aggressive fish try pulling him out for 24hrs "timeout"

just let things happen more naturally. slow down the buying bro RETAIL THERAPY KILLS!!!

I just have to give my two cents on that... I had two maroons in a tank that were there first and supposedly aggressive, added a foxface, royal gramma basslet and a sixline wrasse over time. The sixline grew, started getting extremely aggressive, the clowns never defended themselves, one disappeared one day, and just the other day I had to remove the sixline and put him into another tank because he was going to kill my maroon and royal gramma, it was just a matter of time.

When researching sixines they always seem to be listed as peaceful, mine however is not, maroons are listed as aggressive and mine is far from it. Not to mention in my other tank I have a clarkii and a blue hippo that are best friends and love their seabe, my clarkii doesn't even defend it against me. He does defend it against the harassing (sixline) wrasse that now lives with them! Sometimes you don't know how you fish are going to act no matter how much research you do or what you think you know about them. I've learned that for sure!

If you are worried about the clown harrasing any new fish you put in there, you can always move the clowns to your refugium when you are putting in a new fish and move some of your rockwork. Keep the clowns in the refugium for a few weeks while your new fish get used to the tank, and then reintroduce the clowns back in. From my own experience and that of others I've talked to this method works well.
