I had a pair of 6 y/o fake percs up until a couple days ago when the female died because of a mini-cycle in the tank. Everything in the tank is back to normal except for my remaining male. He doesn't eat and hangs out in the same set of corals (I've tried to get them to host in anemone before but they wont) all day. He is healthy as far as I can tell, but I am worried.

Is it possible for him to be depressed? Will getting a smaller fake perc make him more active? I am really worried. I am very attached to him.

    Thanks for any help!

I had a clown refuse to eat and we (3 reef) decided that he had an internal parasite and died. I don't know it that is the case with yours, but it is something to consider. Mine went about 5 days without eating before he passed.

I'd add a smaller occ and hope he becomes a he and accepts his role;) They can live a week or so without eating, but maybe add some garlic to her favorite food to entice him.

Add garlic powder or crush some garlic and mix it with his brine shrimp? He was eating just fine the other day before his mate died. Turns out the problem was that the bacteria that break down the ammonia/nitrates/nitrites had died out, so the levels spiked.

Is it guaranteed that he will become a she if I add a smaller occ? I don't want them to end up fighting.

Can't answer your fish question, but how do you know your nitrifying bacteria died out?

I have no clue what happened to the bacteria. I talked with the owner of the only place I got for aquarium needs (very knowledgeable, won't sell me anything that isn't compatible with what I already have in the tank, and remembers what I have) and he said that it was most likely a mini-cycle in the tank. Though i did notice that my coral banded shrimp is missing both front arms (they grow back, so I'm not worried about him), but maybe the arms breaking down was enough to kill the bacteria off.

Hmm I don't think so. You probably had a mini cycle as a result of the lost fish and shrimp. As long as there is fish waste and food waste, bacteria will be there.
