Alright, I set up my refugium, and have most of the rock, and all of the algae/mangroves I wanted in it.

What I'm concerned about is that it seems like there's just a gigantic amount of detritus in the fuge. It's nearly covered the whole bottom of the fuge, in about a week.

Is this large amount of detritus a problem? I know the fuge is supposed to remove nitrates, but the detritus seems like it's going to cause problems since there's just so much in the fuge.

So, does anyone have an opinion on detritus in the fuge?

I was having the same problem and wondered the same thing. I didn't want to risk it so last water change I sucked out as much as I could. I didn't want it to sit & start creating a nitrate problem. Have you seen any increase in nitrates?

It's only been in there a week, but I haven't really tested. I'm adding base rock to combat this, for sure. I didn't plan on having any in the fuge, but I have the room and seem to have the need. Possibly also a filter sock on the drain, if it gets to that point. I just want to know what people think, and what their experiences are with detritus in a fuge.

I don't have an opinion on it, but for the sake of a potential future problem I may have am going to go along for the ride to see more of this thread.

And you get an extra bump

So, does anyone with a fuge have an opinion on this? Should it be cleaned, or left in?

My fuge is the same way. I have what looks like an inch of ditritus sitting on the sand bed. But I've never had a problem with it. I mean with minimal flow where can of go? It's been like that for a few years now. I have always tested zero across the board. It never really gets stirred up either, other than when I'm pulling out clumps of cheato.

I also am having the same problem, the only solution i can think of is to increase flow with power heads to keep the detritus flowing down to the sum to be skimmed/mechanically filtrated?

You could put in a small CUC. I am doing the same.

I have a small CUC in my fuge (I talked to John at reefcleaners for advice) as I noticed the same buildup. Since the addition, I do not see near as much and still test 0 for nitrates.
