My Rsm has been running for 10 weeks today. The past couple days I have had diatoms start blooming on one side of the tank, I also have a little red algea blooming in the corner. The one thing that puzzles me is I have quite a bit of newq corraline growth on the rocks, back wall, and overflow. My tank params are decent. Sg 1.023/ ph roughly 8.3/ amm 0/ nitrites 0/ p03 0/ calc around 435/ nitrates 30/ alk 1.3 (red sea). Tangster is building me a coil denitrater to help get that under control, and I am getting a precision marine substrate reactor for p04s possibly from Tangster if he can get these. I am assuming that the diatom bloom is normal for a young tank. Any help would be appreciated. I will try to post pics tonight.

Yes, it's normal, don't worry. As soon as they finish eating up the silicate supply on your sand, they'll most likely die off. Could be up to a few weeks. What kind of substrate do you have?

Your diatoms shouldn't last too long then, not to worry.

I am not to worried, the only thing I have in my tank at the moment is a cuc. Just making sure my hunch was halfway correct.

    Don't be surprised to see...

Diatom buildup is first of several nuisance algae cycles you are going to experience with a maturing younger tank.

    All normal.

Will disappear in day or so...quicker if hermits in tank...

Persistent algae is indication, most likely, of overfeeding...or inefficient skimming.

    Good luck!

My blue leg hermits are cleaning up as much as they can I assume. I am getting some gunk out of my skimmer. It is real watery though haven't quite dialed it in yet.
