My leather has been closed up now about 3 days and now it appears the center is starting to rot away. It has once or twice closed up for a number of days once for almost a week but I have never previously seen the tissue disintegrate (this is day 2 of the start). I know that they will upon occasion slough off tissue but never having seen it I’m kinda worried.
Looks normal or not? Do I need to take it out.
The tank is in great shape, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate are all at 0, I had a temp spike with the sudden heat a few days back, went to 85, i got it down to 80 with a fan. salainity is at 1.023 at the moment.
    thanks

Hmmm, Leathers are pretty resilient, I would keep an eye on it. What is your AM at? How about your extended params like ALK/CA/MG? When my cabbage Leathers slough they shrivle up and look horrible, but then come back nicer when they're done sloughing.

Oh yeah, what type of lighting is it under?

I'm not sure if it is disintegrating. Take a clean, soft bristled tooth brush and clean the area. It may be just "gunk". I periodically clean off algae and help my large one shed.

My KH is at 10 (179ppm KH/GH), and calcium is at 420. I don't test MG yet, all the stores around here only sell expired kits at the moment at half price. I don't know what AM is though?

To answer unclejed, I did give it a gentle brush and the hole is 1-2 mm deep.

AM is Ammonia, but I think you prob tested it but forgot to list it. I would keep monitoring it, seems like params are fine. Hopefully it's just sloughing but not sure on the hole.

That's not the normal debridement sloughing they go through. If that hole spreads, I would cut off the top. Other, more sensitive corals don't like they mucous they shed. Try to remove it from you tank as you see it. You should keep your water nice and clean and stable to ensure he heals well.

um, I guess I'll mix up a batch of water tonight and start up the hospital tank again tomorrow. At least the mucous won't irritate any of the other corals if this is the case.

It may more simple to take it out and using a scalpel or razor blade, cut a thin slice as if cutting a pie, to take out the crater.
