So I need some advise on what to replace the cannister with. This is for a 40b that is not drilled and is sumpless.I do have a good HOB skimmer, reef octo BH1000 and have been running chemi pure elite in the fluval cannister but am thinking of trying either a biopellet reactor or dual reactors with carbon and gfo(spectrapure). The tank is a mixed reef that has two large toadstool leathers as well as green kenya tree which I believe is also a leather as well as several LPS and SPS frags(no acros). To keep these corals together is it necessary to run carbon or might I be ok with running biopellets? If it would work well I am thinking I would like to use the pellet reactor for the NO3 and PO4 reduction due to less maintanence.

Hi Sailorguy.....I put my carbon and phosguard in a little hangon filter when I ditched my canister. I do run pellets but I still like to have my carbon and phosguard :) You may not need them if you run pellets but from what I've read, most people still need to run some sort of phophate remover in addition to the pellets.

The Biopellets would help with the nitrate and phosphate reduction. What type of biological filtration do you have, do you have live rock? If you are looking to cont to go sump less then you can get a hang on Refugium. If not you need an overflow box to get water to a sump/ Refugium. You will also need a return pump to get water back to the tank.
You do not NEED to run carbon.

I know there are things I am forgetting and I'm sure someone else will chime in and help you out a little more.

Thanks for your replies,I guess one of my main concerns is weather or not carbon is a necessity in a mixed reef with leathers and SPS.I do have ample live rock(50-60lbs) for my biological filtration so that's not really an issue.I wasn't planning to add a sump and am thinking of the biopellets as my means of unwanted nutrient reduction.I could try a dual reactor with pellets in one and either carbon or gfo in the other but I don't know hoe well the dual reactor setups work for this.

I am not sure how the dual reactor would work. I have 2 DIY reactors run separately. I do know that when I hooked up the Biopellet reactor I ran my outlet to a t and had it run straight into the skimmer. So my skimmer is pulling water from the DT and the reactor. Since I did this my skimmer has been pulling a lot more skim mate. That is something else to look into if you plan on running Biopellets.
