I was looking into doing a diy led kit from rapidled for my 60 gallon and I contacted Rapid and they recommended I get a 36 led kit and add 4-6 extra leds. my plan is to mount 14 leds on three 9 x 5 3/8" heat sinks (they told me each driver can support up to 14 leds), and then mount the 3 heat sinks to a bracket to hold them in place so it would be easier to hang. Im still trying to figure out if the DIY led route will be easy enough for me to do. heres what I have as far as placement on the heat sinks. will this idea work? thanks

I decided to do a little bit longer of a heat sink so I can space the leds out a little more so I might do three 12 inch heat sinks instead. also I know if you want to dim each color led seperately you need 2 drivers, but can you run 2 colors to one driver if you dont plan on dimming them seperately?

Your layout looks fine, and you can run two different colors on one driver without a problem, so long as you don't exceed the current of the lessor LED. ie - if you have XR-Es and XP-Gs on that string, you cannot exceed 1A.

Also, you really want to be able to dim the whites from the blues separately. There's no additional labor by doing this, just the cost of one pot.

ya I realized it would be kinda pointless to get the dimming kit and choose not to have independent color control so im going to do it. I am just goin to have to wire 7 leds on the left heat sink and 7 on the right heat sink together and then then do the same thing for the other color, and then the middle heat sink I will just have to wire both colors together. thats the only way I can think of doing it by having 3 heat sinks instead of 2

Do you mean you want to add other colors in the light, except white and blue...And in the middle of the heat sink, you mixed the white and blue color. the three string don't need seperate control. Can you post the light placement ? I am interested in it .
