DIY protein skimmer?

Anyone know a good way to make a diy protein skimmer for a 15 gallon nano? I have an aquaclear 110 running as a refugium, but I would like to make a protein skimmer to fit in it, I have some old filters with working motors, could these be of use for a project like this?

 

DIY skimmers are tough. Usually you are better off getting a cheap skimmer and modifying it. Or getting a good one right out of the box.

I wish I knew how they do it, but my lfs makes them. I havent owned one but they look amazing.

 

yeah but I'm interested in trying it, lol. I'm wondering if there is a way to modify a hang on back filter to be a protein skimmer only.

 

if i find a good plan or anyone else can for me that i can try I will make a build thread on it

 

I've built a number of skimmers that worked well out of PVC pipe, but size would be an issue for the application you want.

yeah it would need to be a bit bigger to be really effective, my idea is to make a cheap hang on back filter into a skimmer, by sealing the top of the filter and adding a collection cup on top, with an airstone inside to push protein bubbles up.. if that makes sense.
