So I just did up this venturi style skimmer. Not yet finished, I just need something to cover the top but I can't find anything. My question is, Does this water level look too high for where the foam should be?

I don't know but you better be starting a thread on the entire project!! (unless you already started one and I missed it!)

Ok So here we go, I've had this 65g tank home with some freshwater fish in it for a while now. One day I decided to try to make my own skimmer. I looked at the design of one my boss made in his day and I tried to replicate it... All you would need is some PVC pipe and fittings, acrylic glue, a pump and the acrylic::). I'll try to explain as I go along.
The venturi is placed colser to the top of the skimmer. The venturi was simply made out of a PVC "T" With a couple washers jammed inside of it in a straight line.

The return again was made out of PVC fittings. The upright tube is cut according to ow high you want the water level in the skimmer... The longer the pipe the higher the water level and vice-verse.

Stick the acrylic together. I had the acrylic pre-fabricated so all I had to do was stick it all together.

The pump I'm running is a proos 2600, approx. 2000 l/Hr. No air intake on the pump. It connects straight to the venturi. You can either connect it with PVC or the bilch hose that I used.

    And that's it. PVC fittings
    Input: 1/2 inch...
    Output; 1 inch

What is the water level without air injection? I would imagine you want it about the top of the reaction chamber. As for a top, you are obviously good with handywork, I would get a piece of acrylic and cut it into a circle, drill a couple small holes for ventilation and maybe a drain fitting in the collection cup. I'll be starting my own DIY skimmer for my nano soon, I'm almost done with my acrylic fuge, woohoo. Nice work btw!

    Thanks!
The water level without air is right above the reaction chamber. Yea, I'm gonna do both soon. get the acrylic for the top and put a drain hose onto the collection cup.
Thanks for the remarks and good luck with ur DIY Project;)

Whats the Diameter of the cup out side to outside and inside to inside I'd need both measurements , The injectors have come along ways A simple 16.00 injector would make that rock you are not causing enough pressure drop to pull in enough air from the looks of that foam .
Air ways like this are tuned and ported for maximum inlet of air . The water level is to high in the cups throat and bubble are to few But the lack of bubbles could be level of salinity also and lack of curing? Thats large of a cup drain is also working against you as there is little back pressure and some is needed about a 5/16 to 3/8 line for this size looking skimmer would do a better job . Get me those measurements I can make you a diverter vent cap for it.. Looks really good though for a first time builder .
Just a few tweaks and you'll have it the boss must have been an old school type :) The design was all the rage i the mid to late 80's Its still a good solid design and equal to most any skimming needs .

But hey like i said you'll get it figured out one of the best DIY skimmers I have seen in a good long while keep it ..;) Oh my bad I see what looks to be a 3/4 pipe on the cup is actually a line behind the cup had me there for a moment
