So I do test often but notice I have the same issue each time low kh 8 and ph is consistant at 8.0 anytime of day. The alk also stays lower. Now my mag is always 1400 and my calcium is 420. Question is should I be dosing something that will keep these numbers up? I dose kh and it rises then falls two days later. So I know there are two part alk and calcium souloutions am I supposed to me doing something like this. I think what saves me is I do water changes reguallry. I am ready to take this water chemestry chalenge thing head on. I guess when I was first into this I crashed a tank messing with it and have just relied on w/c I have a show achillies and new mated cross hatch triggers so now there is to much to lose to mess this up. Thanks for any help.

C-Balance from 2 little fishies is a good 2-part, I also use the aquavitro line (great products). There is one called eight.four that helps with alk. Don't dose directly though, mix with top of water or w/c water. Their magnesium product called ions does a great job w. magnesium that the c-balance failed to keep elevated. They also make a calcium product thats a blend of ionic and bioavailable gluconate-complexed calcium. I just started this product though but I'm sure it will be great too. My alk stays at around 11.

Alk around 8 is fine. Don't worry about pH, just make sure you maintain alk and keep the room the tank is in well ventilated so excess CO2 doesn't build up. A pH of 8 is perfectly fine.

IMO the best 2 part solution is from BulkReefSupply, it is the cheapest and is very high quality. No offense to anyone who uses other products but I think that a lot of other 2 part products are overpriced and you're paying more for packaging and marketing than you are for the actual product regardless of any fancy chemical names they slap on the label, it's still doing basically the same thing.

Here is a good article on chemistry basics, skip over the technical stuff (I do too), hopefully it will give you a better understanding of the chemistry. The next article in that series is about pH if you're interested in learning about that too.

My motto has always been; Keep It Simple Silly. I use that when coaching my bowling students. If everything else is o.k. and all you need to do is raise the Alk a little, great. I am doing the same thing. Since you have already determined the fall off rate, simply add a alk booster to your top off water every 2 days. Reef Builder is good, and as of yesterday I am trying Sea-Lab #14 to go along with Sea-Lab #28.

Ill second the BRS two part. Very cheap, and does the job. Doesn't get any simpler than that.
