Is it bad to have more over flow drain pipe submerged under water in the sump or should i have an air gap between the end of the pipe and the sump water line?

As mentioned, it cuts down on splash noise if you have the drain submerged.

My drain has a long radius sweep under the water so makes no noise at all. Never been a problem in 8 or 9 years of use.
