I have a second 55 gal. tank that I got with a few smaller tanks. I am thinking about drilling the tank for the sump/fuge instead of a overflow. The bottom is tempered so I will have to drill the sides. I was thinking about drilling a 1" hole close to the bottom putting a elbow inside, going up and having a J turn for the outgoing water, and a 3/4" hole close to the top for the returning water. I will have a corner bulkhead just as if it were drilled in the bottom. The only differance is instead of going through holes in the bottom of the tank the water will go throuigh holes in the side of the tank. Does this sound like it will work?? and has anyone done this before??? Thanks

If you are drilling it for a fuge then I just drill them about 4 inches below the top rim then add a 1 in. 90 looking up and a stub of pipe to get the correct water level. I drill all tanks low and then install a 2 sided vertical overflow to ensure top water skimming from the main tank. If you are drilling it for a sump then drill it 4 inches up from the bottom rim to use a external pump..Not sure what the point if the J pipe is going to serve ?
